In 2020 and 2021 Concept Foundation worked closely with Centro de Estudios de Estado y Sociedad (CEDES) in Argentina, to conduct a market assessment to identify possible barriers and challenges to accessing quality assured and affordable medical abortion supplies and services and identify an optimal pathway for the introduction of quality medical abortion medicines in Argentina. This work was undertaken in the context of the law change that took place in Argentina in December 2020, when a restrictive law that had been in place since 1921 was overturned and the government voted in favour of legalising abortion up to 14 weeks of pregnancy.

CEDES is a national NGO who plays a critical role in supporting the Ministry of Health (MoH) planning around establishment and implementation of abortion services in the country. This work was funded by the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition (RHSC) Innovation Fund and under the auspices of the RHSC Safe Abortion Supplies (SAS) workstream and ForoLAC groups.

The outcomes of the market asessment (click below for PDF of full report) were presented via a virtual stakeholders meeting with key MoH officials in Argentina in June 2021, where current existing barriers to accessing medical abortion medicines and forward recommendations to address these challenges were discussed.

The results of the market assessment and outcomes of the virtual MoH stakeholder meeting will be presented to the SAS workstream and ForoLAC members by Concept Foundation and CEDES via webinars being held on 12 and 13 October in English and Spanish resepectively. Recordings of both webinars will be made available on each respective group page on the RHSC website.
