 Global Abortion Legislation

Laws regulating induced abortion vary from country to country. Worldwide legislation can, however, be characterized by five common categories, under which induced abortion may be a legalized medical intervention.  These are:

  • Save the mother's life

  • Protect the mother's physical health

  • Protect the mother's mental health

  • On grounds of socio-economic reasons

  • Without restrictions as to reason (however, with limits to the gestational period until when an abortion is legal).

  Induced abortions are allowed in:

  • 54 countries to save the mother's life

  • 23 countries to protect the mother's physical health

  • 20 countries to protect the mother's mental health

  • 6 countries on grounds of socio-economic reasons

  • 49 countries without restrictions as to reason, however, mostly with limits to the gestational period until when an abortion is legal.
