Devex have recently published an opinion piece by Concept Foundation’s CEO, Dr. Hans Vemer, entitled 7 Lessons on Access to Markets. This is part of an online conversation on Making Markets Work, exploring the issues surrounding making global health care markets accessible to everyone.
This particular piece draws on Dr. Vemer’s and Concept Foundation’s experiences with access barriers to quality reproductive health medicines. It first provides an overview of the challenges facing access to quality oxytocin products in lower and middle income countries; examples of these include cold storage and supply chain issues, or differing priorities among government levels. Dr. Vemer then puts forward seven practical steps that can be taken in order to address these challenges, such as focusing procurement practices on quality and harmonizing government procedures. The article finishes with an emphasis on the need to mobilize end-users and citizens on these important issues.
